The school of a seven-year-old boy who drowned in a hotel swimming pool in Co Clare while celebrating a friend’s confirmation have paid tribute to him saying he will be greatly missed. The boy, who has been named locally as Shay Lynch, was a first-class pupil at Scoil Seanáin Naofa in Clonlara. Shay, from the village Clonlara, CoClaredied following the incident at the Lakeside Hotel and Leisure Centre in Killaloe. In a statement, the principal of Scoil Seanáin Naofa, Donnchadh Kelleher, paid tribute to Shay, saying his ‘bright smile and his kind heart endeared him to everyone in our school community’. Mr Kelleher added: ‘He will be greatly missed. ‘Our thoughts and prayers are with his parents Tania and James, his sister Abi, the extended family and his wide circle of friends.’ He added that the school has implemented its critical incident management plan, and is liaising with the National Educational Psychological Service to ensure support structures are in place to help the school community. A garda inquiry and aHealth and Safety Authorityinvestigation have been launched in an attempt to find out what exactly happened. A post-mortem examination was due to be carried out on Sunday. The boy was rushed toUniversity Hospital Limerick(UHL) by theNational Ambulance Service, but he was later pronounced dead a short time later. In a statement from garda headquarters, theysaid emergency services were alerted to the incident shortly before 3pm on Saturday. The hotel said: ‘Our deepest sympathies, thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and those who knew the young boy who passed away following a tragic accident in our swimming pool yesterday. ‘We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our lifeguards, team members and the emergency services who did all they could in responding to this incident,’ the statement said.
