Make your own sparkly unicorn slime with the kids today! In fact, in this post, you’ll find not one – but two different types of slime for unicorn lovers.
I think this slime recipe is a really great combination of many early learning skills and concepts, such as:
- Science
- Sensory
- Small world play
- Fine motor skills
- Math
- Vocabulary
- Teamwork
Plus, it’s just plain fun to make and play with. I mean, glitter, unicorns, and slime . . . what’s not to love?!
I know not everyone enjoys making slime with children, but I find it to be a lot of fun. Mostly because of how excited the kids are about it, along with the endless learning possibilities.

Unicorn Slime
If you don’t know how to make slime with kids, don’t worry! I’ve been able to experiment with lots of different slime recipes over the years. And from those experiments, I’ve narrowed it down to two tried-and-true recipes that I can always count on.
This activating ingredient in this slimy concoction just so happens to be contact lens solution. Which is convenient because many people already have this on hand. If you were blessed with good vision, no worries! It’s readily available at plenty of stores near you.
My absolute favorite thing about this slime is the whimsical add-ins that we included. I just love the unicorn theme. And I have a strong feeling that the kids will, too!

Unicorn Slime Materials
Of course, as with any good recipe, the first thing you need to do is round up all the supplies. Here’s what we used (I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post):
- 4 (oz.) bottle of Elmer’s school glue
- ½ tbsp. Baking soda
- 1 tbsp. Contact lens solution(must contain boric acid and sodium borate)
- Unicorn buttons
- Variety of glitter
- Large mixing bowl and spoon
- Plastic mat to protect your surface
As always, the possibilities for slime are endless! So, you could certainly include any other items of your choice. Here are some other ideas, in case you’re interested:
If you’re looking for a recipe that requires even fewer ingredients, you could always use our liquid starch slim. Just follow the base recipe and add in your unicorn-themed items at the end.
How to Make Unicorn Slime
Once you’ve gathered all of the materials, you can jump right in!
To begin, you’ll pour the entire bottle of glue into the bowl. If you’re anything like me, you purchase glue in bulk. If so, just measure out 4 ounces and pop that right into the bowl!
Next, mix in the baking soda. This is our thickening agent, so be sure to mix well.
Now for the activating agent! Add in a tablespoon of contact lens solution. As you mix, you will notice the slime separating from the bowl.

Unicorn slime wouldn’t be complete without a little bit of magic. When making this slime, the real magic happens when you knead it. Knead for at least two minutes, or until the slime reaches the desired consistency.
I like my slime to be super stretchy, but not sticky. If you find that your slime is a bit too sticky, try working in 1/2 teaspoon of contact lens solution at a time until it’s just right.
Now that your slime is ready, place it on a plastic mat. Then add in the unicorn buttons and glitter. And then let the kiddos play, play, play!

Rainbow Unicorn Slime
It is widely known, in all the cool preschool circles, that unicorns poop rainbows and glitter. So, why not go the extra mile to create some unicorn poop slime?! If you’re averse to that name, you can always just call it rainbow unicorn slime.
For this project, you’ll need a few different colors of slime. So, just make a few batches of the base recipe above and add some liquid watercolors or food dye into each batch. I recommend using pink, purple, and blue to create some pretty pastel colors!
And what would unicorn poop be without some sparkles?! Pair the pastel slimes with gold slime to make the perfect, magical unicorn rainbow slime.

Slime Safety
Making slime is so much fun that you might forget it’s really a science experiment! As with all science fun, safety is the number one priority.
First of all, this activity requires adult supervision at all times (like all Fun-A-Day activities). And we always begin and end our activities with a good handwashing.
From the ingredients to the final product, make sure no one puts anything in their mouths. If you have a student who is prone to putting things in their mouth, I’d suggest putting the slime into a clear container, or a strong gallon-sized bag that seals.
Finally, be sure to watch out for skin reactions from interacting with the slime. I’ve never seen any reactions when working with slime (many, many times) but it’s definitely something important to watch for.
Besides that, the children are free to explore and play with the slime as they see fit (within reason, of course)! You will love getting to watch them come up with new and interesting ways to interact with the slime.
