Phasmophobia is a horror game that can be enjoyed solo or with other players. There are multiple objectives in the game, with the main goal being to identify which type of ghost is haunting the location.

Completing this primary task requires the use of different tools and courage to go inside the haunted building. There are a total of 12 different ghosts with different abilities to identify.

This is a guide to help you out the next time that you’re playing the ghost investigator. It covers what’s good to think about for each specific ghost, weaknesses and strengths, its tendencies, and what evidence is required for each ghost type.

So, let’s get going to help you find all of the evidence that you need before your sanity drops to dangerously low levels and you become the ghost’s next victim.

Spirit strengths, weaknesses, and evidence

Phasmophobia: All Ghost Types, Strengths, Weaknesses, and Evidence - Outsider Gaming (1)

The Spirit is the first ghost type that appears in the Journal, and in there, it says that it’s the most common ghost that you can encounter. That said, all ghosts have the same chance of appearing. A Spirit does not have any discernible characteristics and can easily be mistaken for other ghosts until clear evidence is found.

The Spirit does not have any strengths, but it does have a weakness. This weakness is Smudge Sticks. Using the Smudge Sticks on the Spirit will stop it from attacking for 180 seconds instead of the regular 90 seconds.

To confirm that the ghost is a Spirit, you’ll need to collect Ghost Writing, Fingerprints, and Spirit Box evidence.

Wraith strengths, weakness, and evidence

Phasmophobia: All Ghost Types, Strengths, Weaknesses, and Evidence - Outsider Gaming (2)

Second in the Journal are the Wraiths, which are best known for being able to fly. Therefore, they don’t leave footprints while moving, which can normally be seen by using UV-light. You should note that they can still step in salt piles.

As Wraiths don’t tend to touch the ground, footstep sounds from them are rare. They can also travel through closed doors. While the Wraith has all of these strengths, the ghost type’s weakness is that they have a toxic reaction to salt, which increases the Ghost Activity.

To identify a Wraith in Phasmophobia, you’ll need to find evidence of Fingerprints, Freezing Temperatures, and via the Spirit Box.

Phantom strengths, weaknesses, and evidence

Phasmophobia: All Ghost Types, Strengths, Weaknesses, and Evidence - Outsider Gaming (3)

This is a scary ghost that does not like the Camera. It appears as the third ghost type in the Journal, with it being said that the Phantom can possess the living and is summoned by the Ouija Board. However, there has yet to be anything in Phasmophobia that proves this statement.

Your sanity will drop significantly from looking at the Phantom, both during a normal appearance and during a hunt. Luckily, it does have a weakness: the camera. If you take a photo of the Phantom, it will temporarily disappear. However, it will not stop a hunt.

You’ll need to get an EMF Level 5 reading, Freezing Temperatures, and Ghost Orb evidence to identify the terrifying Phantom.

Poltergeist strengths, weaknesses, and evidence

Phasmophobia: All Ghost Types, Strengths, Weaknesses, and Evidence - Outsider Gaming (4)

This ghost is easily identified by its ability to manipulate objects. It tends to interact with doors and toss a lot of items at its location. It can also roam around to interact with objects far away from its room. This can make it tricky to identify a Poltergeist’s location if it is in an empty room.

The Poltergeist’s strength is to manipulate multiple objects at a time, affecting your sanity. This is also its weakness, though, as it will be ineffective in an empty room.

For evidence, to identify a Poltergeist in Phasmophobia, collect Ghost Orb, Spirit Box, and Fingerprints as proof.

Banshee strengths, weakness, and evidence

Phasmophobia: All Ghost Types, Strengths, Weaknesses, and Evidence - Outsider Gaming (5)

While other ghosts change their player target between hunts, the Banshee does not; it will target one player until it successfully kills them. This behaviour makes the Banshee very dangerous for the target, but easier for other players to finish objectives.

The strength of a Banshee is that it will only focus on one player at a time until it kills them, unless the target has left the building. If a Banshee finds its target, it can start a hunt early on – even if sanity levels are high. Their weakness is the Crucifix, with it being effective at a greater range of five meters instead of just three metres.

Collect EMF Level 5, Fingerprints, and Freezing Temperatures as evidence of a Banshee being present.

Jinn strengths, weaknesses, and evidence

Phasmophobia: All Ghost Types, Strengths, Weaknesses, and Evidence - Outsider Gaming (6)

The Jinn is a lover of electronics, interacting with them more than any other ghost type in Phasmophobia. It will make phones ring, cause radios to activate, turn on TVs, trigger car alarms, and interact with light switches a lot, turning them on and off. Jinns also have the power to instantly decrease your sanity by 25 per cent if you are within three meters of the ghost.

The Jinn’s strength is that it will move faster if the target is far away. However, you can prevent this by turning off the location’s power source.

A Jinn can be identified by seeing the EMF hit Level 5, a Ghost Orb, and by using the Spirit Box.

Mare strengths, weaknesses, and evidence

Phasmophobia: All Ghost Types, Strengths, Weaknesses, and Evidence - Outsider Gaming (7)

Mares like the dark and love to turn off the lights in its location. The fuse box is also a common target for the Mare, allowing it to make the whole building dark. They can also initiate hunts within moments of each other while stalking low-sanity players in the dark.

The Mare has a much higher chance of attacking in the dark and will do what it can to make its location dark. On the flip side, it’s less aggressive when the lights are on.

Collect Freezing Temperatures, Ghost Orb, and Spirit Box evidence to successfully identify the ghost as a Mare in Phasmophobia.

Revenant strengths, weaknesses, and evidence

Phasmophobia: All Ghost Types, Strengths, Weaknesses, and Evidence - Outsider Gaming (8)

The Revenant is one of the most dangerous ghost types because it can catch up to players during a hunt. While most ghosts have one target during a hunt, the Revenant can switch between targets and prefers to go after the closest player in view.

This ghost’s strength is that it moves very quickly during a hunt – travelling twice the normal speed when hunting a victim – making it impossible to outrun a Revenant. If you do manage to hide from it, however, the Revenant will instead move very slowly.

An EMF Level 5 reading, Fingerprints, and Ghost Writing combined point to a Revenant haunting your location.

Shade strengths, weaknesses, and evidence

Phasmophobia: All Ghost Types, Strengths, Weaknesses, and Evidence - Outsider Gaming (9)

A Shade is a shy ghost, making it hard to find. If multiple players are nearby, it will lower its activity. It also prefers to target players who are alone during a hunt.

Being both a strength and weakness, its shyness makes it hard to detect if there are two or more players nearby. It will also rarely start a hunt when players are grouped together.

You and your team may need a different strategy to coax the Shade into giving up its EMF Level 5, Ghost Orb, and Ghost Writing evidence, given that it’s shy in nature.

Demon strengths, weaknesses, and evidence

Phasmophobia: All Ghost Types, Strengths, Weaknesses, and Evidence - Outsider Gaming (10)

Demons are considered to be the most dangerous ghost to encounter. This is due to it being very aggressive and being able to attack without warning. So, it’s integral that a Demon is identified quickly. There is a consolation, though, as the Ouija Board is its weakness. However, for that, you also need the luck that the Ouija Board spawns.

It is the most aggressive ghost and will start hunts more often than other types. Using the Ouija Board when there is a Demon will not lower a player’s sanity, making it possible to ask questions without risk.

To confirm that the ghost is a Demon, you’ll need to collect evidence of Freezing Temperatures, Ghost Writing, and via the Spirit Box.

Yurei strengths, weaknesses, and evidence

Phasmophobia: All Ghost Types, Strengths, Weaknesses, and Evidence - Outsider Gaming (11)

The Yurei is similar to the Spirit in that it doesn’t have any discernible characteristics, such as interacting with the environment. However, this ghost is very scary and can drain sanity fast.

As for strengths, Yurei have the ability to considerably drop a player’s sanity during a manifestation. Its weakness is the Smudge Sticks: using them will prevent it from wandering the location for 90 seconds – normally, this only prevents a hunt during those 90 seconds.

To identify a Yurei, you’ll need the following types of evidence: Freezing Temperatures, Ghost Orb, and Ghost Writing.

Oni strengths, weaknesses, and evidence

Phasmophobia: All Ghost Types, Strengths, Weaknesses, and Evidence - Outsider Gaming (12)

Onis become more active around their prey, effectively making them the opposite of the shy Shade ghost. It can be one of the easiest ghosts to find as they can also move objects at great speed, but this activity doesn’t drain your sanity as it would with a Poltergeist.

The strength of an Oni is in its ability to be more active with multiple players around. This is also its weakness, though, as its activity can make it easier to find and identify.

You’ll need to note EMF Level 5, Ghost Writing, and Spirit Box evidence to identify an Oni in Phasmophobia.
