Simple Construction
Let’s talk about the simple construction of this easy crochet pattern. Looking at this Chunky Cardigan you may not believe that this is aneasy skill level patternthat beginner garment crocheters will love!
The most complicated part about this free crochet pattern is the alpine stitch pattern not the construction! If you have ever crocheted the Alpine Stitch before then you already know just how simple it is!

Once you complete the body panel all you have to do is make a few simple folds and seams. Then you are basically done and just have to add the ribbed border on the cuffs and body! Be sure to pay attention to the hook size here because I call for a smaller hook on the cuffs.
Pattern Details
This pattern is designed to use bulky weight yarn and an oversized crochet hook to achieve an amazing drape to flatter all body types.
The body and ribbed border around the body are made using a 12.00 mm crochet hook while the ribbed cuffs are made using an 8.00 mm crochet hook. this is done to create a a cuff with more form and stretch to it than the ribbed border on the body to have a better fit.
The side seams are easy to do, just be sure to align your row ends and I would suggest using a whip stitch.
The oversize fit of the hygge cocoon cardigan is made in 3 size ranges, Petite, Standard and Plus. Reference the measurements in the pattern notes to choose your bet fit for your body type.
This project is as easy to wear as it is to make and is perfect for the colder months. To me this cocoon cardigan crochet pattern is perfect to cozy up with and drink some hot chocolate!

- Foundation Double Crochet– Fdc – Chain 4, yarn over, insert hook into 4thchain from the hook, yarn over and pull up loop (3 loops on hook, yarn over and pull through 1 loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through all loops (1 foundation double crochet with chain at bottom created). *Yarn over, insert hook to bottom of the stitch you just made, it will look like the top or “V” of a stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 1 loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over pull though all loops, repeat from * to desired st count.
- Front Post Double Crochet– FPdc -Work a double crochet as you normally would by placing your hook from front to back to front around the post of the designated stitch.
- Back Post Double Crochet– BPdc -Work a double crochet as you normally would by placing your hook from back to front to back around the post of the designated stitch.
- Front Post Treble Crochet– FPtr – Work a tr as you normally would however, insert hook from front to back to front around the dc of the previous row to complete your stitch.
- Alpine Stitch Explanation– This pattern is worked in alternating rows of sc and FPtr/dc. The Alpine stitch is worked with an alternating dc and FPtr row, with the FPtr worked in the dc stitch two rows down and skipping its corresponding sc. The dc is worked in its corresponding sc stitch. You will also skip one dc between each FPtr on the previous dc row.
Pattern Notes
- Sizes– Petite (Standard, Plus)
- *Designates a repeat.
- “sc 1” means to single crochet in the next stitch.
- “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches.
- “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next stitch to create an increase.
- This Cocoon Sweater is very oversized, each size is really more of a one size fits most, so choose based off of the type of fit you would like.
- For reference I am 5’-7” and about 130 pounds wearing the standard size.
- Panel Measurements (when flat):43 (45, 47)” stitch-wise by 24 (26, 26)” row-wise.
- Body Opening When Seamed (without trim):19 (19, 21)” plus 4” of collar trim.
- Finished Approximate Length (with trim):28 (30, 30)” when worn.
- This stitch stretches a lot and is very drapey.

Cocoonigan Free Crochet Pattern
Body Panel
Using a 12.00 mm crochet hook.
MC – Row 1– Fdc 67 (71, 75) sts.
CC – Row 2–Ch 1, turn, sc across.
MC –Row 3– Ch 2, turn, dc in first st, FPtr in second stitch of the previous dc row, *dc, FPtr in dc row, repeat from * until 1 st remains, dc in last st.
CC – Row 4–Ch 1, turn, sc across.
MC – Row 5– Ch 2, turn, dc 2, FPtr in third stitch of the previous dc row, *dc, FPtr in dc row, repeat from * until 2 sts remain, dc 2.
Rows 6 to 36 (39, 39)– Repeat Rows 2 – 5, alternating your MC and CC as noted, finish off.
Body Panel – Assembly
- Lay your panel the long way flat with the wrong side up so that the right side is facing down.
- Fold your top corners down on a 45 degree and then fold your bottom corners up on a 45 degree as if you are making a paper airplane so that the first and last row are touching, if needed use stitch markers to keep the corners aligned. ( Points A to C and Points B to D in diagram)
- Take your darning yarn needle, thread it using Color A and seam in from where your top and bottom corners meet on each side leaving 13 rows unseamed creating the arm hole. (Left open for cuffs) TIP: If you are having trouble place another set of stitch markers where you will need to stop seaming.
- Repeat Step 3 on other side.
Cuffs – Ribbed
Using a 8.00 mm crochet hook, reattach your yarn where you seamed together on your Body Panel.
MC – Round 1– Sc evenly around in row ends, sl st to join, ch 2, turn. [26 sts]
Round 2– Dc in each st, sl st to join, ch 2, turn. [26 sts]
Round 3– *Fpdc, BPdc, repeat from * to end, sl st to join, ch 2. [26 sts]
Rounds 4 to 9– Repeat Row 3, finish off and repeat for second cuff.
Body Trim – Ribbed Border
Using a 12.00 mm crochet hook, reattach your yarn where you seamed together on your Body Panel.
MC – Round 1– Sc evenly around in the stitches of first and last rows skipping the seams, sl st to join, ch 2, turn. [136 (142, 150) sts]
Round 2– Dc in each st, sl st to join, ch 2, turn. [136 (142, 150) sts]
Round 3– *Fpdc, BPdc, repeat from * to end, sl st to join, ch 2. [136 (142, 150) sts]
Rounds 4 to 6– Repeat Row 3, finish off and weave in all ends.
