DIY Valentine's Day Wreath with Scrap Fabrics (2024)

Hi friends! We’re sharing this pretty DIY wreath idea using leftover fabric and upcycled materials that’ll look great for Valentines Day but also throughout the year.

A Beautiful DIY Wreath using Scrap Fabric Hearts

Using the same sewn hearts from last year’s scrap fabric heart garland, I was able to reuse the pieces to make this pretty wreath for my front door. Although I don’t tend to go all out with Valentine’s Day decor, this DIY wreath made with scrap fabric hearts adds just the right amount of romance to the house. And who doesn’t like a bit of romance?

I’m really happy with the choice of fabrics! By using a muted floral silk patterned and pairing it with a rustic denim, this heart wreath is neutral enough that it will look great all year long. For your DIY wreath, try using fabrics that are non-seasonal to get the most use out of it.

How to Make a Pretty DIY Wreath:

Preparing the hoop

To start, paint the surface of the MDF hoop in pink and set it aside to dry. As it turns out, the hoops isn’t visible after the wreath is done so you can also skip this painting part if you like.

Sewing the Large Hearts

Cut out the fabric scraps into heart shapes using the large hearts template provided. For added interest, I cut one side in denim fabric and the other side in a colored silk. You could however stick with the same fabric for both sides.

Since the silk was light and flimsy compared with the denim, I added a lightweight fusing to the back side to help stiffen the silk and make it easier to sew with.

With the RIGHT sides of fabric together, sew the heart closed with a ¼” seam allowance from the edge. Continue all the way around leaving a 2” gap opening.

Clip the center of the heart as close to the stitch line as possible. Take care not to cut the stitches. This will help the fabric lay flat when it’s turned right side out.

Turn the stitched heart right side out. You can insert a pencil into the heart to smooth out the edges.

Lightly fill the heart with polyester batting.

Assembling the Wreath

Start by laying out the large hearts on the wreath hoop until you are happy with the arrangement.

Next, glue each of the large hearts to the hoop with hot glue.

Then, lay out the small hearts over top of the large ones until you are happy with the arrangement. In addition to being decorative, the small hearts help to stabilize the larger ones on the ring.

Glue each of the small hearts onto the larger ones.
