I’m not the mom that goes overboard when it comes to school projects, but I do LOVE creating some unique valentines boxes for boys. They’re oftentimes forgotten about during Valentine’s Day, but this DIY Dragon Valentines Box will light their flame for the holiday. Put it together as a fun way for your child to exchange valentines in the classroom – it’s a great way to bond too!

While you can certainly make this Dragon Valentines Box for any age, I think it’s most appreciated at a grade school level (and they can help out more too). If you’ve got a preschooler, you’ll probably be doing most of the work, but they can help with the decorating.

How To Make Your DIY Dragon Valentines Box

Materials Needed For Dragon Valentines Box:

  • Red Craft Paper
  • 1 Small Vertical Box + 1 Medium Square Box (I used a cream cheese box & cracker box)
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Glue Gun + Sticks
  • Heart Stickers
  • Card Stock (White and Black)
  • Pencil
  • 2 Googly Eyes
  • Cardboard Toilet Paper Roll (Cut In Half)

Step-By-Step Directions To Make Your DIY Dragon Valentines Box

To start, wrap your two boxes with the red craft paper (as you would a gift with tape) and glue gun the pieces together to start your body shape.

Use your pencil to draw a v-shape on the mouth and cut it out. Secondly, use your pencil to trace a rectangular slit at the top of the dragon, to collect the valentines. Cut it out as well.

For the legs and feet, cut your cardboard toilet paper roll in half and wrap with red craft paper. Secure with either tape or glue gun. Repeat so both are wrapped.

Glue gun the both legs onto the bottom of the rectangular box. Use your scissors to cut slits. Draw and cut a circle from your white card stock and cut in half (so you’re left with two half circles). Slide the half circles up the slits of your legs – to be the toes.

For the dragon valentines box teeth, use your white card stock to draw a v-shaped spiked pattern.

Cut out with your scissors and glue gun on the inside of your dragon’s mouth. Glue gun your google eyes. Use a heart sticker for the nose.

To make the dragon’s wings, cut out two heart shapes with the white card stock. I used a cookie cutter for a more precise heart shape. Layer the two hearts and glue them onto the body to be the wings.

Optional: I outlined the hearts with a marker. Another option is to add a “horn” by using a long black card stockpiece near the eyes – glued on.

Finally, make the tail by folding a long piece of the red craft paper into a cylinder. Glue it onto the back of the dragon. Add another heart from the white card stock at the end of the tail.
