This Cozy and Quick Chunky Crochet Hat is really easy and quick to make! You only need 1 ball of yarn to make an Adult size hat. It’s made with Super Chunky Weight Yarn [6] and uses beginner crochet stitches like single crochet, double crochet, and chain stitches. You just need to remember one row of stitches for the main hat pattern. This awesome, cozy hat matches last week’s chunky crochet scarf perfectly so you can make a complete set.

You’ll need Super Bulky Weight Yarn [6] and a 9 mm (M) crochet hook for the hat band and a 10 mm (N) crochet hook for the hat body portion of the pattern.

The pattern is presented with the Adult Medium hat instructions first. Beneath these instructions you will find the BONUS Hat Sizes which include 6-12 months (3-5 years, child, teen, adult large) and how you can make this hat in any size, with any yarn and hook.

The Yarn I used

For my Cozy and Quick Chunky Crochet Hat I used oz ( g) / yds ( m) of King Cole, Big Value Super Chunky [6].

This soft and squishy yarn is made of 100% premium acrylic. Each ball includes 100 g (3.52 oz) and 90 yds (81 m).

This easy to work with Super Bulky Weight Yarn is perfect for creating warm and cozy projects, like scarves, hats and blankets. Projects work up very quickly using this soft, chunky yarn. It is available in many different colors too!

Disclaimer: The yarn used to create this project was given to me by King Cole.

Cozy and Quick Chunky Crochet Hat

Supplies

• Yarn: King Cole Big Value, Super Chunky. (check your local yarn shop here). 3.52 oz (100 g) and 90 yds (81 m). 100% Premium Acrylic. Super Chunky Weight Yarn [6]. Machine washable at 40°C. Cool dryer. Do not iron. Do not bleach. Dry clean any solvent.
• Color: 1 skeins Porcelain (Shade: 3311)
• Crochet Hook: 9 mm (M) and 10 mm (N)
• Finished Project: Adult Medium Hat: 3.52 oz (94 g) and 90 yds (81 m)
• Scissors, Tapestry Needle (yarn needle)

Finished Sizes

• Adult (Medium) Hat circumference approximately 21 inches X 8 inches height.
• 6-12 months, (3-5 years, child, teen, adult large) hat circumference approximately 16 (18, 19, 20, 22) inches X 6.25 (6.75, 7.25, 7.5, 8.5) inches height.

Gauge

• Approximately 7 sts per 3 inches and 3 rows per 2 inches worked with a 10 mm (N) crochet hook for the hat body.
• Approximately 6 sts per 2 inches and 5 rows per 2 inches worked with a 9 mm (M) crochet hook for the hat band.

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

• Stitch multiple of 3
• The initial ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
• Make your sl st to join tightly.
• We turn after every round.
• You will find the written instructions for the Adult Medium hat (the sample made) below. Beneath these instructions you will find the complete hat pattern for sizes 6-12 months (3-5 years, child, teen, adult large) as a combined pattern.
• You can easily make this hat in any size. Simply crochet the hat band until it fits comfortably around the head, then make sure you have a number of rows that you can divide by 3. Then join the hat band as instructed and proceed to the main hat pattern. Work rows until you reach the height you want and close up the top!

Cozy and Quick Chunky Crochet Hat

This hat is worked from the band up to the crown in one-piece.

ADULT MEDIUM COZY AND QUICK CHUNKY CROCHET HAT

HAT BAND

Using your 9 mm (M) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):

R1: Ch 4, sk 1 ch, 1 sl st in each rem ch across, ch 1, turn. [3 sl st]

R2-R51: 1 sl st in the BL of each st across, ch 1, turn. [3 sl st]

Bring the edges of R1 and R51 together, with R51 on top. Work R52 (the joining row) through the bl of R51 and through the rem loop of the foundation chains made in R1.

R52: 1 sl st in each st across. [3 sl st]

Do not finish off. Proceed to the Hat Body instructions below.

HAT BODY

Using your 10 mm (N) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):

Rnd 1: RS: Sk the joining row end. *(1 sc, ch 1, 1 dc) in the next row end, sk the next 2 row ends**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to the first sc to join, ch 1, turn. [17 sc, 17 dc, 17 ch1sp]

Rnd 2: Sk the first dc and the first ch1sp. *(1 sc, ch 1, 1 dc) in the next sc, ch 1, sk the next ch1sp and the next dc**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to the first sc to join, ch 1, turn. [17 sc, 17 dc, 17 ch1sp]

Rnd 3-Rnd 11: Rep Rnd 2.

Proceed to finishing instructions.

BONUS SIZES:

6-12 MONTHS (3-5 years, CHILD, TEEN, ADULT LARGE)

HAT BAND

Using your 9 mm (M) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):

R1: Ch 4, sk 1 ch, 1 sl st in each rem ch across, ch 1, turn. [3 sl st]

R2-R39 (R42, R45, R48, R54): 1 sl st in the BL of each st across, ch 1, turn. [3 sl st]

Bring the edges of R1 and R39 (R42, R45, R48, R54) together, with R39 (R42, R45, R48, R54) on top. Work R40 (R43, R46, R49, R55) (the joining row) through the bl of R39 (R42, R45, R48, R54) and through the rem loop of the foundation chains made in R1.

R40 (R43, R46, R49, R55): 1 sl st in each st across, ch 1. [3 sl st]

Do not finish off. Proceed to the Hat Body instructions below.

HAT BODY

Using your 10 mm (N) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):

Rnd 1: RS: Turn your work to work across the row ends of the hat band. Sk the joining row end. *(1 sc, ch 1, 1 dc) in the next row end, sk the next 2 row ends**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to the first sc to join, ch 1, turn. [13 (14, 15, 16, 18) sc, 13 (14, 15, 16, 18) dc, 13 (14, 15, 16, 18) ch1sp]

Rnd 2: Sk the first dc and the first ch1sp. *(1 sc, ch 1, 1 dc) in the next sc, ch 1, sk the next ch1sp and the next dc**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to the first sc to join, ch 1, turn. [13 (14, 15, 16, 18) sc, 13 (14, 15, 16, 18) dc, 13 (14, 15, 16, 18) ch1sp]

Rnd 3-Rnd 8 (9, 10, 10, 12): Rep Rnd 2.

Proceed to finishing instructions.

Finishing Instructions:

• Finish off leaving a long tail for seaming the top of the hat closed.
• Weave the yarn tail in and out of the front loops of each sc and dc in the last round of stitches. Pull to tighten and weave the end in securely on the inside of the hat. View my hat closing tutorial here.
• Weave in any other remaining ends.

You can useany yarn and hookto make this project!

1. With the yarn and hook you’ve chosen for the project, chain until you reach a hat band width of approximately 1 to 1.5 inches. Follow the instructions for the hat band as written until you reach a comfortable hat band length.
2. Now, check that the number of rowss you have crocheted in the hat band can divide evenly by 3.
3. Join the hat band as written.
4. Follow the pattern as written for your hat and stop once you have reached the hat height you’d like for your hat.
5. Find common hat heights here.
6. Finish off and weave in your ends.
