    Avid cyclist here:
Agree w/ Joe. Also wear your gear/lights which means and be visible… Pick your routes and time of day….. Don’t trust that all autos see you or know how to pass you appropriately. I ride 100 to 150 miles a week for recreation and fitness depending on the weather. Saddle up and remain vigilant

Florida statues says what? FS 316.2065 Says A bicyclist who is not traveling at the same speed of other traffic must ride in a designated bike lane or as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway.

NE news says, “she collided with a Chevrolet Tahoe that was also traveling north on Highway 95A.” So, BOTH were northbound. Does that mean both were traveling north OR did Tahoe pull out in front of her, turning northbound?? Friday morning (was it dawn or almost noon)? Makes a difference of who is at fault.

Florida statutes states that the bicycle is to ride in the center of the lane for the direction they are traveling, unless there is a bike lane, and other vehicles are to treat them as if they are another regular vehicle. This means that other traffic is to be COMPLETELY in the other lane to pass them.

In the 70s was turning right from West Gregory onto Pace Blvd. Naturally looked to my left for oncoming traffic. When clear started to pull out to hear a ‘thump’ to the front end of my car. A boy on a bike was riding fast down the hill on the wrong side of the road and collided with the front end of my car and glanced off to come to a stop. He was not injured, thank goodness, but when his mom and police came they both scolded him for riding on the wrong side of the road.

Just a month before the same thing happened to my wife on West Jackson as the bike rider was riding on the wrong side of the road and glanced off her when she pulled out. Thankfully both were not hurt and both were scolded by their parents.

From those two incidents I try to take caution pulling out from streets onto others to make sure I pay attn looking for oncoming bikes, scooters, riding on the wrong side of the road.

    Lessons learned.

First and foremost if you ride a bicycle on a narrow road like 95-A you are lucky if you don’t get killed !!! Not saying the drivers are bad just saying they are in a hurry to do the things they got to do one like got work!!! I’m not saying don’t ride a bicycle I’m saying if you do expect this to happen because it will !!!

The problem with “riding against traffic” is the when going through an intersection you are in a zone where cars pulling out do not generally look. A pedestrian is moving slow enough to not go in front of a car ready to pull out. Statistically, the most dangerous way to bike is at night with little light, ride against traffic, ride DUI.

Bicyclists are supposed to ride with the traffic but, I think that is stupid. I would not do it. When you ride against the traffic, at least you might have time to make an evasive move if you see a vehicle coming at you.

Was she riding in the proper lane? Do you ride with or against the traffic?
